Packing A Punch – The Theatrical Illustrations of William 'Bill' Hewison
William ‘Bill’ Hewison (1925-2002) was the legendary art editor of the renowned satirical publication Punch, where he worked for more than three decades producing illustrations to accompany the magazine’s theatre reviews.
In the 1990s he joined The Times as its theatre caricaturist. During his long career, Hewison would regularly be seen at the front of the stalls on opening nights sketching the leading actors on stage.
When Hewison died in 2002, some of his original artworks went up for public auction.
This exhibition at The Horton is drawn from the collection of originals held by the Hewison family and all illustrations are available for sale.
This is a rare opportunity to secure a unique artwork by a much-loved cartoonist, celebrating the history of British theatre.
Hewison’s drawings are held in many private collections, as well as at the V&A, the British Cartoon Archive, the Billy Ireland Cartoon Library & Museum (at Ohio State University, USA).
